The Ultimate Revenge by the Cebuano death metal act Comatose is probably one of the best, if not the best, death metal records ever produced from the Philippines. This record is the first full-length album of the band, and it was fabricated faultlessly after 12 years of demo and EP releases. The album contains 8 killer straightforward death metal tracks.

The listeners must prepare themselves for 31 minutes of outstanding barrage of pulverizing riffs, heavy pounding drum work, face melting guitar solos, and demonic vocal display. Now, Comatose is one of those bands that have stayed pure in their musical style. You can hear an obvious Morbid Angel, Deicide, Vomitory, and even Slayer touch in their music. The band pretty much followed the classic way of brewing an old school extreme music masterpiece. ‘Rivals of the Throne‘, ‘The Sickening Ways‘, ‘Army of Darkness‘, ‘Plague Bearer‘ and ‘Carnage in the Promise Land‘ are my personal favorites in this record. Don’t get me wrong though, because for an extreme music aficionado like me — who loves death metal tunes that are straight old school and evil — all the songs in this album were flawlessly put together. But the 5 tracks that I had mentioned are the perfect examples of how death metal should be played.

The tracks ‘Army of Darkness’ and ‘Rivals of the Throne’ possessed furious and intense death metal signature riffings, clobbering drumming, and face melting solos that will totally make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. ‘The Sickening Ways’ and ‘Carnage in the Promise Land’ holds that powerful demonic vocal work — it’s like Deicide meets Vital Remains type of vocal work — and the customary Florida death metal energy. While the track ‘Plague Bearer’ has that very lucid Slayer influence stirred with some fervid hint of Malevolent Creation.

The band also has great songwriting skills. They are one of the few bands coming from the Philippines who actually knows how to compose and fabricate a good song. I can also find no drawbacks about the album production. All of the tracks were exquisitely recorded and mixed. The audio master obviously did a fine job during the post production process of the album.

To wrap things up, The Ultimate Revenge is a must own album, and it is totally worthy to be added on your record collection. An album like this is what we need in an era where every death metal band are trying to be technical and progressive. If you people are planning to visit the Philippines, be sure to drop by Cebu city and watch a live show of Comatose. I’ve seen numerous underground gigs by the band, and all of those shows I’ve witnessed have proved that they are the real deal.
